Randy Rice is an internationally recognized software testing expert, author, trainer, and consultant. For more than four decades, he has helped testers strengthen their skills and organizations improve the quality of their software.
His perspective is grounded in practical experience. Randy began his career in software development before moving into testing, quality assurance, management consulting, test leadership, and training. That broad background enables him to understand quality from both the technical and organizational sides—and to communicate effectively with everyone from individual testers to senior executives.
Experience that matters
Randy has worked with organizations throughout the world on mission-critical systems in government, defense, aerospace, financial services, insurance, energy, healthcare, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, retail, telecommunications, and technology.
His experience includes work with NASA, every branch of the United States Department of Defense, a major intelligence agency, NIST, and organizations regulated by the FDA. He also developed one of North America’s first training courses devoted to validating blood-banking systems.
Although the industries and technologies vary, Randy’s approach remains consistent: understand the risks, ask better questions, and focus testing on the information that matters most.
A career devoted to learning and teaching
Randy has trained more than 30,000 software testers around the world and created over 70 courses in software testing, quality assurance, software engineering, and related disciplines.
His training is known for being practical, conversational, and grounded in real-world experience. Rather than simply teaching terminology or processes, Randy helps people develop the judgment needed to make sound testing decisions in complex situations.
His courses range from foundational testing skills and ISTQB certification to advanced topics such as test planning, test design, risk-based testing, test automation, security testing, and test leadership.
Leadership and professional credentials
Randy holds the ISTQB Advanced Level Full certification, along with eight other ISTQB certifications, and has served in leadership roles throughout the international software testing community.
He is Treasurer of the Association for Testing and Software Quality Assurance, AT*SQA, and was a founding contributor to the Certified Software Test Engineer—CSTE—certification program. He has also served in leadership roles for ISTQB security-testing working groups and chaired the Quality Assurance Institute’s International Software Testing Conference.
These roles have allowed Randy to help shape professional testing practices while remaining closely connected to the everyday challenges testers and test leaders face.
Author, speaker, and podcast host
Randy is the author of three books on software testing and quality, including Surviving the Top Ten Challenges of Software Testing. His writing combines practical guidance, professional insight, and lessons learned during a career spent helping people solve difficult quality problems.
He has spoken at major international conferences, including EuroSTAR, STARWEST, and STAREAST, and is the host of The Value of Testing podcast on YouTube. Through the podcast, Randy explores testing, quality, leadership, artificial intelligence, automation, and the continuing importance of human judgment.
